History
Troyes is rich in history.
Evangelized during the 3rd century, spared by Attila thanks to the courageous act of the bishop of Saint-Loup who gave his life to save the city, Troyes prospered until the 8th century. It was then invaded by the Saracens and the Normans. In the 10th century it became an important market town of the Champagne region and benefited from trade, religious and intellectual exchanges until the Hundred Years War.
Following a time of doubt, the Renaissance offers to Troyes another thriving period and the town becomes the 5th most important city of the French kingdom. The heritage of this century is still present in the city through its architecture, art, sculptures and crafts.
Despite tragedies, such as the big fire of 1524 and the famine which the city had to face during the 17th century, Troyes' rapid development continued with the industrial revolution: it soon became the capital of the hosiery and knit businesses.
During the 20th century, as for most of the cities in the Est of the country, Troyes was bombed and occupied. Miraculously, the historic centre was not destroyed and still stands.
Troyes today
Historic Capitale of the Champagne region, Troyes is a town best discovered on foot.
Strolling through the historic heart of the city called "le Bouchon" (the cork... of Champagne, of course) by its inhabitants, you will be charmed and surprised by the gothic churches lit by listed stained glass windows, multicoloured wood-clad houses, Renaissance buildings, rehabilitated industrial buildings... all the historic periods are represented.
Troyes is also the largest factory outlet centre in France and offers, minutes away from the heart of the city, the biggest fashion names at unbeatable low prices as well as activities for all ages, prestigious museums, booming universities, small restaurants where little known Champagne names can be discovered.... Troyes is a city where you'll enjoy living year round.
Culture
Troyes is rich in culture with several libraries and theaters which stage some of the biggest shows.
Each year, during the last week of October, the Nuits de Champagne host some of the best known artists and singers. In May, the Foires de Champagne which go back to the Middle Ages, still draw thousands of retailers and shoppers.
