Introduction

In this article, we will focus on virtualization machines through the vSphere tool.

The benefits of virtualization

The benefits of virtualization:

  • Reduction of cost (electricity, space, cooling system).

  • Ease of managing the server fleet in the long run

  • simplifying the update of server components

What is vSphere

VSphere is the VMware Virtualization solution. In this article we will focus on the "ESXi Hosts" and the vCenter Server two of the many VMware tools.

ESXi Host: This component corresponds to the virtualization layer for the physical server, in other words it will have the role of hypervisor, thus allowing us to create and manage virtual machines using the resources of the physical machine.

vCenter is an ESXis management tool. It is accessible through a web interface (vSphere Web Client) and an application (vSphere Client) that will allow access to this server and manage the creation of machine, cluster, verification of the state of the hosts, and many other configurations on the various systems. The Vcenter is a software to install on your server.

Installation of the ESXi

Select ESXi - 6.5.0

The installation will start, click on "Enter" to start the installation.

Click on F11 to Accept License Terms

Select the partition where you want to process the installation. Press "Enter" to continue the installation.

In this step, you can select the keyboard to use.

Enter a Root password (a password for the super user) Some requirements must be met for security:

  • Special characters, uppercase, lowercase, numbers, more than 7 characters, no word in the dictionary)

Press "Enter" to continue.

System preparation

Press "F11" to proceed with the installation.

Installation in progress

This view indicates that the installation has been successfully completed you can press "Enter" to re-start the ESXi server.

Your server is started. You will find on the homepage the ipv4 and ipv6 addresses of the server. Press F2 to change the server settings.

You are prompted for your superuser password to access the configuration space.

On the configuration space you can change the user password by selecting "configure Password", Configure Management Network, Restart Management Network,Test Management Network, View System Logs, View Support Information, Reset System Configuration.

We will switch the Ipv4 address in static.

To do this, select Configure Management Network -> IPv4 Configuration

Select "Set Static IPv4 address" and insert the static IP address for this host, its subnet mask for the default gateway. Press "Enter" to validate

Press "Y" to validate the changes or "N" to ignore them.

You can restart the network interfaces by clicking on "Restart Management Network". Then confirm by pressing "F11".

Installation of vCenter

On your Windows server dedicated to vCenter mount ISO "VMware-VIMSetup-all-6.0.0"

Lancer l’autorun.

We will use the installation script.

Press "Install" to start.

Click on "Next"

You are asked to accept the license agreements.

Select "vCenter Server and Embedded Platform Services Controller"

Enter the network name for the system

Enter an administrator password

Select the user who will be the service user for the vCenter server

Select "Use an embedded database (vPostgres)

You can choose ports for deployment

Specify the storage path for this deployment

Click on Next

Summary of the parameters for the installation

Click on "Install" to start

Installation in progress

The installation is complete. You can click "Launch vSphere Web Client" to launch the vSphere Management web client.

Enter username and password

Here is the web client:

Conclusion

We have seen in this article one of the facets of vitualization through VMware tools (vSphere, ESXi, vCenter).
