Search Engine Optimization, SEO, is the process of improving the ranking of a website in search engines. The higher or more frequently, a web site is displayed in a search engines list like Google, the more visitors it is expected to receive.

Create a Site Map

Site Maps are XML files that list every URL in the website. It may be made by a website developer or provided by the web host. It is important to use two site maps for the website, an XML version and a static version. XML version can be created by sitemap generators tools such as: https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ . The sitemap should be uploaded to the root folder of the web server and should then be submitted to the Google Webmaster Tools account for that site. The static version should be an HTML page that contain links to every other pages.

Include meta description and title tags

< title> Your site title </title>< meta name="description" content="your site description"< meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, keyword3"

Title tag on pages of the website tells Search Engines what the page is about. It should be 4-8 words and include the business or brand name and keywords that relate to that specific page only. Meta Description on pages of the website gives Search Engines an insight into what the page is about. Write accurate meta description tag since it is often used by Search Engines to describe a website in search results for human audience. It should have 15-160 characters and do not stuff it with keywords. The keyword meta tag should contain between 5-10 keywords or keyword phrases that are also found in page content.

Validate HTML Code

Search Engines rely on the basic correctness of the code to find out which portions of your web page to index and if the HTML code contains errors, it may be possible that only a portion of the web page are included in the Search Engine`s database.

Off-Site Optimization's goal is to get other websites to provide links to a specific website. There are three kinds of links and link building techniques

Its goal is to get other websites to link to the website. Three kinds of links and link building techniques:

i) Organic Links – These are links that are not asked for, and are the best kind. They are on sites with high authority such as major news outlets and other well-recognized name websites.

ii) Whitehat – good, quality link building (should strive for)

iii) Blackhat – spam, low-quality link building (should avoid)

Good incoming or back links can also increase Search Engines ranking and traffic of a website. Major Search Engines rank web pages based partially on the number and quality of links that point to the site.

Search Engines also learn more about the current website by internally linking all of its pages

Link building is not only reserved for external sites linking to the website; Search Engines also learn more about the website by internally linking to other pages on the website within its content.

Keywords

There are many ways in identifying keywords related to a site's content. A keyword can be a word that describes the overall topic, or could be a popular search term leading people to the site, or a word from a specific topic or blog post.. Dispersing keywords throughout your content is the key to perform well with Search Engines. Include keywords in header tags, title tags, meta tags, URL and in the anchor text used to describe links. Do not be tempted to shove a lot of keywords onto the webpages as Google has unleashed an over-optimization penalty that targets websites that have too many keywords stuffed onto one page. When it comes to keyword optimization, think of up to five keywords or keywords phrases for each page on your website and optimize for those.

Provide new content and minify code

Good web content keeps site visitors interested and coming back for more; this leads to higher search engine rankings. Quality pieces that are useful and engaging for humans should be created. Readers will share the work, generating additional backlink and Search Engines will recognise the quality piece because it will flow naturally with not too many keywords. Write content people want to share on Social Networks. Search Engines will read those social signal as a signal of the quality of the domain. Re-visit some old content and re-write it with search engine optimization hat on, updating image attributes, changing keyword density, adding links to the home page and other relevant content on the site. After all that, minify the code. Minifying the code helps to remove all unnecessary characters from the code, like white space, new lines and comment when it is uploaded to the server.

Use Alt tags to describe images

Search Engines don`t know how to deal with dress up images on webpages. Using alt tags and including keywords in the descriptions make images searchable by search engine`s bots. Also, large and high quality images slow down a website and take server hosting space as well. Optimize images, using e.g. Photoshop, or manually to reduce image resolution.

Conclusion

Mastering SEO requires a great deal of study and effort. Even when you achieve a basic level of effectiveness with one website, you have to continue your research to stay up-to-date, and you still have many other variables and environments to consider before you will be able to point your expertise at any site and be effective. Even then, you will be working against some business-specific variables that are out of your control and will need to adapt and modify accordingly.
