The new technological challenge for the airlines companies today is
to implement a new entertainment service for these passengers including
WiFi on board.
An internet connection will allow to enjoy multimedia contents
(movies, TV), make phone calls, to continue his professional work.
Several companies have embarked on this development, with various
free and paid offers.
Technology needed to transmit data
The technologies to obtain the internet in an airplane are few and
difficult to implement.
The first option is to take advantage of relay antennas that are
present on the land territory. This is the least expensive, but long-haul
flights will encounter problems when passing through areas without an
antenna such as the oceans.
The second option is to use a geostationary satellite. This allows
to have a connection on all the flights, because the cover is possible on
the whole of the globe.
Technologies required to the aircraft level
In order to receive these frequencies, airplanes need to equip
themselves with receiving and transmitting antennas.
Then, the aircraft must be provided with a network infrastructure
including a modem and WiFi terminals distributed in the cabins.
