Introduction

OnePlus is a Chinese brand of smartphones and headphones created in 2013. This unknown brand of the general public, manufactures the most powerful models available to the general public. Put away from  two behemoths of telephony, Apple and Samsung, OnePlus takes more  in addition to its brands and is starting to make itself known. Proponents  affordable for advanced smartphones, the brand finds itself propelled  in the spotlight, raising some mistrust on the part of  consumers. We will first see the story of OnePlus,  then the different models that could be developed by the chinese brand. Finally we will compare OnePlus and its main competitors who  monopolizes a large part of the market.

The story of OnePlus

The story of OnePlus begins in November 2013 when Peta Lau resigns as vice president of electronic product company  Oppo. He launched OnePlus with his partner Carl Pei.

Before deciding what equipment they would use for  their first smartphone, they appeal to Internet users around the world  to define the specifications of the very first OnePlus. January 7th  2014 Lau signs a partnership with CyanogenMod. This partnership  lets propel OnePlus into the race of the greats with the experience  software of CyanogenMod.

April 23, 2014 is the release date of the very first smartphone of  at OnePlus: the "OnePlus One". To acquire it you had to have a  invitation, so the risks of non-sales were much lower.  It was impossible to have it in store, which made a VIP side  very powerful phone for the time.

January 30, 2015 brings up the brand new System  of OnePlus: "OxygenOS". They separate themselves from  CyanogenMod. The reasons for this change are related to a clause  exclusivity of Cyanogen in India.

After a few months, OnePlus releases its second opus: OnePlus Two  July 28, 2015. The presentation of the smartphone was carried out  fully under virtual reality. In one week the OnePlus Two has  totaled more than two million bookings.

In late 2015 OnePlus released the OnePlus X which is a derivative version of  2. With a much more worked design but also with  slightly lower characteristics. The OnePlus X was even more  affordable than its predecessor.

OnePlus One

The OnePlus One as mentioned above is a smartphone marketed  on April 23, 2014. Based on an operating system derived from Android,  allows a certain appeal and renewal compared to others  smartphones of the time. Here are its technical characteristics:

Price : 299€ for the 64GO version and 269€ for the 16GO.

Operating system: CyanogenMod 11s, variant of version 4.4  Android (KitKat)

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor with 2.5  GHz Qualcomm

Screen : JDI 5.5 inches

GPU : Adreno 330 to 578 MHz

RAM : 3 Go LP-DDR3, 1866 MHz

Battery : Lithium Polymer Battery 3100 mAh

Cameras : 13 MP in dorsal, 5Mpx in front

Sensors: gyroscope, compass, proximity sensor, accelerometer,  brightness sensor, GPS, NFC

Weight : 162g

Halving the price of standard phones of the same range or quality, the OnePlus One upsets the ideals and the prejudice of the different consumers. The first thing we can fear are the concessions on the product itself. Is the battery as good than on other smartphones? Is it tough on shocks and will it last long time ? These questions, in part, bother consumers because they can think of negligence on the quality of the product to some place to recover profitability on different customers

So it's hard to imagine OnePlus making a big profit  on its product or even to repay the investment of their product.  When compared to different smartphones equivalent of the time under  Android operating system, the OnePlus One does not have to blush, well at  opposite.

The Samsung Galaxy S5, having almost the same characteristics as  the OnePlus with some differences like RAM (more  important at OnePlus) or the camera (more powerful at Samsung)  the price difference is enormously felt. Sold at 649 € at the time, the difference in price of more than 300 € hit the mark and accentuated the  distrust and confusion.

The Sony Xperia Z2 has just like the Samsung Galaxy  S5 features very similar to the OnePlus. With a  outstanding 20.7-megapixel camera, the 13-megapixel camera  OnePlus palier widely. But a smartphone is not just a smartphone  only to his camera. This difference is worth the difference  price 400 €? Because yes the Sony Xperia was selling for 699 euros!

Finally the iPhone 5S direct competitor in 2014 with  overall characteristics well below that of OnePlus is found  also with a price difference of 400 € with a market value  minimum of € 699.

OnePlus Two

Achieving its goals brilliantly for the OnePlus One, the brand  OnePlus is propelled on the front of the stage of the big companies of  smartphones. With a full success on its sales of phones,  OnePlus brings together all the features of a good smartphone in the  OnePlus One, which makes it a great lowcost phone. A year after the  release of this first successful opus, OnePlus had to convince and refine  their technology for the OnePlus 2!

Sold for 399 €, this second smartphone increases the price bar  OnePlus of 100 €, which is not negligible. He must therefore prove and  convince old users as new or unconnected  that the OnePlus smartphone is not here to stay a small actor of the  world of telephones, but indeed actor on whom it is necessary to count  and that we can not do without Under the same banner of the report  quality-price, this OnePlus 2 tries somehow to break the prejudices  in order to stand out from other brands.

Main Features

Price : 339€ for the 16GO version with 3 Go of Ram ou 399€ with 64 Go and 4 Go de Ram

Operating System: OxygenOS 2.0 Overlay - Android 5.1.1  (Lollipop)

Processor : Processor Snapdragon 810

Screen : 5.5 inches GPU : Adreno 430

RAM : 3 or 4 Go LPDDR4

Battery: Lithium Polymer Battery 3100 mAh

Cameras: Back-up Camera: 13 megapixels Aperture  f / 2.0 - OIS - Laser Autofocus - Dual-tone Flash Camera profile: 5  megapixel

Sensors: gyroscope, compass, proximity sensor, accelerometer,  brightness sensor, GPS, fingerprint reader

Weight : 175g

In appearance, the OnePlus 2 is once again setting the bar very high.  With characteristics equivalent to or greater than those of  the most powerful smartphones on the market and a price well below the  competition, the OnePlus remains in line with its predecessor, the  OnePlus One.

The OnePlus Two also underwent a makeover compared to its  predecessor to improve the comfort of the phone. He gets  and a much better ergonomics, it is much more pleasant to  use by its shape but also by its metal edges  conferring a grip super nice.

However, the design has changed very little. Wanting to persevere in  their success, the designers of OnePlus have unfortunately taken no  risk on the innovation of their smartphone. There is thus little difference on the visual aspect of both smartphones.

The OnePlus 2 also adds a fingerprint sensor. This  fingerprint sensor also acts as a home button since this is  the same button. To unlock his OnePlus, leave his thumb on the  button allows instant unlocking. However, you must register  these fingerprints first.

The second OnePlus brings up a new feature  making it very easy to change the notification system. In  Indeed, a sliding button is on the side of this very expensive OnePlus.  We can easily switch to a silent mode in case of meeting  unforeseen, for example.

The smartphone thus keeps an excellent quality-price ratio even if  prices have risen by around 100€ compared to its first version.  With a slightly lower screen resolution of the Samsung Galaxy S6  (competitor of the time), the OnePlus 2 keeps features  similar or better for a much lower price of about 300€. The  finishing and attention to detail however remains a fault on the phone that  lack of finesse moment unlike the model of Samsung.

However, when pricing, OnePlus meets competitors  fierce for the price-quality ratio. For example the Honor 7 has a price  more affordable of 299€. With a little less space and a processor  less than the OnePlus, the Honor 7 still keeps  features similar to the OnePlus 2 for a price lower than 100€.

Compared with the Apple iPhone 6, the OnePlus 2 is excellent  Fig. It exceeds or equal the characteristics of the bestseller of the  American brand, at all levels, except perhaps on the system  operating system or the design itself. The iPhone has a layer  OS more neat and worked than the OnePlus.

So OnePlus is no longer the leader in the price-performance ratio but  the smartphone is still one of the main players in the market for  high-end phones at low prices. They remain in the race of the  best smartphone while keeping prices affordable unlike  some competitors.

OnePlus X

Following OnePlus Two, Oneplus decided to develop a second  smartphone less efficient than the two but intended more for  users attached to the design of the phone while keeping good  performance. It brings together a compromise between the design that can fish  on the OnePlus 2 with slightly less technical features  optimal while maintaining satisfactory performance. Here are his  characteristics :

Price : 269€ in version Onys and 369€ in version Ceramic

Operating system : overlay OxygenOS 2.0 - Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop)

Processor : Processor Snapdragon 801 2.3 GHz

Screen : 5 inches GPU : Adreno 330

RAM : 3 Go LPDDR3

Battery : 2525 mAh

Cameras : Back-end camera: 13 megapixels Aperture  f / 2.0 - OIS - Laser Autofocus - Dual-tone Flash Camera Profile: 8  megapixel

Sensors: gyroscope, compass, proximity sensor, accelerometer,  light sensor, GPS

Weight : 138g

The fingerprint sensor is no longer an integral part of  phone. The phone is also smaller with a size of 5  inches. OnePlus had to make some sacrifices in order to raise prices  affordable and good features. Its refined and simple design removes  the neglected aspect that the mark could bear on its old  models.

Conclusion

OnePlus is a brand that has shaken the prejudices on the report  quality price of smartphones. On his first two generations of  phone the brand has implemented in mind its image of luxury  lowcost.

You will see in my next article how OnePlus knew  develop its brand to maintain this image but also the  developments of the different smartphones of the brand.
