Avis favorable du comité de lecture

We have reviewed in the previous parts, the different versions of the Unreal Engine 4, how they have evolved, to arrive at the latest version which is the Unreal Engine 4; we have also seen how to get it and install it, to see now how to use it and launch its first project with this engine.

First of all we will see the different contents of the Epic Games launcher.

Launcher content

First of all we will see the different contents of the Epic Games launcher.

The part we are interested in is on the left:

  • The first tab is about the community part: it's a kind of blog, where people post things about the Unreal Engine. You can take a look around AnswerHub if you have any questions, the moderators are very active and answer quickly. However, you must ask your question in English.

  • The second tab "Learn" is a part about the different tutorials offered by Epic Games. They are very complete and start with the basic concepts up to the most complex ones. (There are also a large number of tutorials made by independent developers, on youtube in particular). At the bottom of this page, you will find a "Engine Feature Samples" section: Here you will find small games or demos made by Epic Games. You can download and test them to get a first impression of the engine, its interface, and the result it can offer.

  • The third tab is the "Marketplace" tab: Here are different packages available for purchase, which can help you to make your projects. These are sets of textures, animations, or lighting, among others, that you can buy and integrate into your projects. They are made by designers, artists....

  • The last tab: "Library". Here you can see your version of the current engine; you can add older versions by clicking on the "+" next to "Engine versions". Below you can see the list of your projects. And in "Safe", you have access to the content you have downloaded (demos, packages...).

Conclusion

Now you know what a game engine is, you know Unreal Engine and you know how it evolves to achieve what we are interested in today: version 4. You have installed the launcher and are ready to launch the engine to start learning how to become a video game developer. In case of problems, don't forget that you have good links in the learn and community tab.

Next part, launch your first project, to learn how to use the Unreal Engine 4 engine. We will review the interface.
